THE ISLAND PROJECT FARMING & EDUCATION CENTRE CREATING CHANCES FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE FARM BASED ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM LEARNING AIMVOC ENTRY 3, LEVEL 1 & 2 ACCREDITATION BESPOKE INDIVIDUALIZED PLACEMENTS

The Island Project supports the permanently excluded, the at risk of exclusion and vulnerable, challenging learners aged 9-18.

The Island Project offers tailored pastoral support and alternative education services for junior and secondary school students, as well as those categorized as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). Our primary focus is on children who face a high risk of underachievement due to a range of complex reasons, and for many of them, traditional mainstream education has proven ineffective. We have found that many students who struggle in a conventional classroom setting thrive in more therapeutic environments, especially when engaging in activities such as animal-assisted projects and outdoor sessions.

Our project specializes in the development of Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) through the implementation of outdoor learning, animal-assisted projects, and AimVoc Accreditation. The curriculum we offer at The Island Project is diverse and goes beyond animal care, focusing on lifelong independence skills and improving soft outcomes. Our daily activities promote essential skills like teamwork, active listening, resilience, and the development of self-esteem and confidence. We also prioritize the teaching of SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural education), British Values, and Personal, Social, Health, and Economic education (PSHE) at our facility, allowing our students to enhance their understanding of the world and cultural capital.

Situated on a 3-acre piece of land in Draycott, Derby (DE72 3PD), our farm is equipped with various learning areas, including converted stables and portacabins. These facilities include two converted containers used for woodwork workshops, a courtyard designed for sports and animal training, and a café with an undercover shelter.

At The Island Project, we are committed to providing a nurturing and empowering environment for your students.  We believe in the transformative power of our unique approach to alternative education and look forward to partnering with you to make a positive impact on the lives of your students.

Success Story:

“Our son was a withdrawn teenager, rejected and struggling in many ways in a very difficult phase of life. The love and the acceptance he’s received from staff at the Island and the therapeutic influence of the animals have made such a difference to him in himself and in terms of behaviour and outlook. He has loved it and will miss it hugely. We are very grateful for the Island.”
