About The Island Project

The Island Project supports some of the region’s most complex young people. Projects and sessions focus on animal-assisted learning and outside of the classroom-based activities such as animal-welfare, woodwork, art and SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural) topics.

The projects animals have largely been rescued or re-homes on the projects therapeutic 3-acre farm. The project gives these animals a fresh start in life and young people are learning to care for animals in an appropriate way. The project also provides alternative education to young people who for a range of complex reasons are not accessing mainstream school. Typically, the young people who access the project also experience social, emotional and mental health issues.

As a not for profit company The Island Project relies on regular payment from placing authorities in Derby City, Derbyshire and Nottingham. Recent changes in payment methods have caused the project to have huge cash flow issues. This has led to the project facing financial hardship. As a result several staff have been laid off and the remainder of the staff team have had inconsistent pay.

The plan is to raise £20,000 to help support the project through this tough period. This will allow the farming and animal side of the organisation to be supported and thrive in a healthy way. The £20,000 budget will be used to cover animal feeds and maintain animal welfare standards.

The project hopes to achieve this target through community effort, monthly onsite meetups, an online donations shop and fundraising efforts. For an in-depth insight into what has happened, please visit the projects fundraising web page which can explain in more detail.
