Thank you for considering making a custom donation for The Island Project Farming & Education Centre.
The Island Project Farming & Education Centre is a “not for profit” company, offering Alternative Educational Provision.
The Island Project is educationally and socially inclusive. Based on a unique 4-acre therapeutic farming site housing donkeys, llamas, goats, sheep, pigs, ducks, rabbits, cats, ferrets as well as chickens. Converted stables and portacabins make up our different learning zones, 2 converted containers are used as a woodwork workshop; we also have a sports area and a large café.
This environment at The Island Project has been created so that the learners can relax in calm and less ridged learning space. The majority of learners are at serious risk of underachievement and for most, conventional mainstream education has failed to engage them.
Many learners who are unable to cope with a classroom environment find that they thrive in more therapeutic surrounding utilising animal-assisted projects and outside of the classroom-based sessions.
What’s happened?
Recent changes in payment processes have caused the project to have huge cash flow issues leaving the project facing financial hardship. This has led to several staff being laid off, and inconsistent pay for staff. The plan is to raise £20,000 to help support the company through this tough period so that the farming and animal side of the company is supported and can thrive in a healthy way.
The Island Project supports some of the region’s most complex young people through animal-assisted learning and outside of the classroom-based projects. The £20k budget will be used to cover animal feeds and maintain animal welfare as well as giving the company a buffer to deal with emergencies and unforeseen financial demands.
The project hopes to achieve this target through community effort, monthly onsite meetups, an online donations shop and fundraising efforts.
